The Awaji Puppet Theater was founded by volunteers to preserve and pass on the traditional "Awaji Ningyo Joruri" of Awaji Island. The group began its activities after World War II, when this culture was in danger of disappearing, and took over the tools and techniques of the prestigious "Denjiro Yoshida Theater. The group has performed both in Japan and abroad and has received much acclaim, and is now designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan. This culture backed by history and tradition continues to deeply impress audiences.
